“The Darkness of Death and the Fullness of Life: sickness as opportunity for growth and life in Karl Rahner’s theology”
Canon Thomas writes: For many of us, times of sickness and death (and especially pandemic) are something to be ‘got through’, ‘survived’ or ‘beaten’. But for the Jesuit Karl Rahner, times of death and sickness are encounters with our finitude which have limitless potential for growth and life. According to Rahner, when we accompany people through times of darkness, our task is to uncover the altar of the heart, where God fills us with a light too bright for us to see. Here there is truly life to be found.
