GUIDANCE FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM FOR THE SPIDIR SPIRITUAL DIRECTION TRAINING COURSE 2024-2026

Thank you for your interest in the Spidir Spiritual Direction Training Course 2024-2026!

  • Purpose of the course: Please note that the aim of this course is that students who complete the two years will become Spiritual Directors in the Christian tradition. (If you are already seeing people for Spiritual Direction, you are still welcome to join this course.)
  • The Spidir Course is ecumenical, and is open to lay or ordained people - but please note that this is a Christian-focussed course and the expectation is that students will practise the Christian faith in some way, whatever their type of church, chapel or meeting place.
  • The Course Tutors are Jacky Sutcliffe, John Philpott-Howard, May Nicol and Rosemary Shaw. The course materials were compiled by Christopher Chapman.
  • The venue of the course is St Hugh’s Church Bermondsey (about 5 to 7 minutes’ walk from London Bridge and The Shard.
  • Course dates: Please check the list of course dates on the website as, barring unforeseen circumstances, the expectation is that you will attend each day of the course, and the two residentials. Obviously, if you are working, you may need to take annual leave or study leave. In addition, it is expected that students spend at least one additional day a month on private study in their own time. Most course days there is some preparation to do for the following course day.
  • Application form: You can EITHER complete the online form, which is automatically sent to Spidir; OR you can complete the same form using the Word document, and send it to the email address at the bottom of page 3. If you prefer, you may then print off the blank form, complete it by hand and send it to the postal address at the bottom of page 3.
  • Referee 1 should be a member of clergy or a pastor or church/chapel/meeting place elder or leader who has known you personally for at least two years.
  • Referee 2 should typically be a good friend or co-worker or other person who has known you personally for at least two years and who understands the general nature of Spiritual Direction and what Directors do.
  • Fees: The fees for the course are £500 for each of the two years. This can be paid as a lump sum or in five lots of £100 or by a standing order of £50 a month for the 10 months of each year of the course. If you need any assistance with finance please contact us (as below).
  • Interviews: We will have face-to-face interviews with all applicants in the early Spring, in central London (probably in the London Bridge area). We will contact you about this and send you guidance on the kind of things we cover in the interview. Please note that places are limited to approximately 16 to 18 so are subject to availability of places.

If you have any queries do contact me, the Chair of Spidir, The Revd John Philpott-Howard, at philpotthoward@aol.com. If you would like to ask in confidence a member of the recent course (2021-2023) to discuss what it was like for them, just let me know (same email address) and I will put you in touch with one of the former students.

If you would prefer to complete the application offline, please download the Word Application Form.

Closing date for applications: April 30th 2024
